Choosing hosting for a small site
For a small site the choice is less about raw speed and more about matching the type of hosting to what the site does.
1. Decide what kind of site it is
- Static site (plain HTML, like this one): static hosts and CDNs such as Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages or Netlify are often free and very fast.
- WordPress or another CMS: you need PHP and a database — shared or managed WordPress hosting fits here.
- Custom app or automation server: a small VPS gives you full control but you are responsible for updates and security.
2. Check the essentials
- Free SSL (HTTPS) and easy renewal.
- Automatic backups and a simple way to restore.
- A data-centre region close to your audience (e.g. Europe or Middle East for Saudi visitors).
- Email: included mailboxes or support for an external provider.
3. Read the pricing carefully
Many hosts advertise a low monthly price that requires paying for several years upfront, and the renewal price is higher. Compare the renewal price, not just the first term, and check the refund window. Always confirm current prices on the official site.
4. Keep your domain portable
Make sure you can change DNS freely and transfer the domain later. Keeping the domain at a separate registrar makes switching hosts easier.
5. Start small
A new site rarely needs more than an entry plan. Upgrade when you see real resource limits, not before.
